Es un anillo de silicona que contiene dapirivine -un fármaco antirretroviral- y es el primer método de prevención del VIH/sida diseñado para las mujeres, que soportan la carga más grande de la epidemia global. El dispositivo -que cuesta U$7 y debe ser reemplazado cada mes- se ha puesto a prueba en Malawi, Sudáfrica, Uganda y Zimbabue, ya que en África subsahariana la tasa de contagio entre las mujeres es más alta.
Hasta ahora los resultados clínicos muestran que solo una de cada tres mujeres que lo usan están protegidas ante el virus que produce el sida. Aún así, explican sus promotores, es la única opción en lugares donde muchos hombres se resisten al uso del condón y realmente puede hacer una diferencia.
